Grantham bowler Katie Tagg was crowned Under-19 Junior Irish Open Champion at the weekend.
Last year, Katie travelled to Dublin and on her 16th birthday became the under-16 champion. Unable to defend that title due to her age, she returned this year to take part in the under-19 event – a much tougher ask.
However, she was not fazed by the challenge and qualified for the four-player round robin in second place with a 202 average over nine games, with a 233 top score.
Once again, like last year, she saved her best for last and smashed her way through the finals, making up a 30-pin deficit to the leader.
She averaged 226 in the final three games to beat all her rivals in the round robin and return home the day before her 17th birthday as under-19 champion.
The Irish Open was one leg of the Youth European Tournament in which Katie tops the rankings after three events in England, Belgium and Ireland.
The next leg of the tournament is in France on December 6.
Katie is a regular at Grantham Bowl in Dysart Road and will be among other bowlers dressing up as super heroes to raise money for Children in Need in a sponsored strikes competition on Friday night. The event begins at 7pm.
