Grantham Tennis Club’s annual club championships culminated with finals day last Sunday.
The new Arnoldfield facilities were put to good use, with the mini red (8 years & under) event being held indoors. Sponge balls and no weather to contend with meant the quality of play was very high.
Lilya Dunn won the girls’ event and Joshua Harris the boys’. The mini oranges (9&under) braved the elements with Jack Croft winning the overall event.
In mini green (10&under), the only mini event played on a full-size court, Martha Patton won the girls’, while James Peace triumphed in the boys’ event.
Junior events included doubles and singles from the 12&under category up to the 18&under age group. Notable days were had by several juniors including Thomas White (winning the 16&u singles, 18&u doubles and finishing runner-up in 18&u singles). Joe Patton enjoyed success on the day too, winning the 14&u boys’ doubles with partner Lewis Picker, the 14&u boys’ singles and finishing runner-up in the 18&u boys’ doubles.
Andrew Isaac regained the 18&u boys’ singles title for the third year running and also won the 18&u boys doubles. Other winners included: Jake Gibbons – 12&u boys’ singles, Cerys Jones – 14&u girls’ singles/14&u girls’ doubles (with Lydia Marshall), Megan Jones – retaining the 18&u girls’ singles/18&u mixed doubles (with Michael Cragg).
The parent and child competition again proved a huge success, with Ella and Lianne Tapson winning the junior event. Martha and Sarah Patton triumphed in the mini parent and child, and Oli and Angela Anderson were victorious in the mini red parent and child.
A relatively new concept for the GTC club championships was the veterans’ events. The 35+ ladies’ singles was won by Mell Milner, while the 45+ men’s singles title was taken by a deserving Murray Shaw.
The 45+ men’s doubles were crowned as Robert Isaac and Nigel Birch, whilst the mixed 35+ event was a hard fought victory for Peter and Ros Elphick. In the 60+ events, Wendy Stewart enjoyed double success to win the ladies’ singles and doubles.
Neil Robertson and Liz Frobisher won double crowns also, completing victories in the singles (Neil), mixed doubles together, and ladies’ doubles (Liz). Dale Wright and Paul Dixon won the super veterans’ men’s doubles.
In the adult senior events, Richard Cragg won the men’s singles, men’s doubles (with Andrew Isaac) and mixed doubles (with Charlotte Palul). Lianne Tapson also enjoyed two victories, with a winning effort in the ladies’ singles and doubles. Lianne and Mell Bloodworth versus Charlotte Palul and Megan Jones was the match of the day in the ladies’ doubles final, with Lianne and Mell winning 7-6 6-7 6-3 in an epic that lasted more than two hours.
