THE weekend started well for Grantham Tennis Club with the mixed doubles first team recording a win over Sleaford.
The home team made light work of the visitors with a comprehensive win and comprised Jackie Wilson, David Blanchard, Robert Start, Sue Rowland, Lianne Tapson and James Drennan.
The men’s fourth team didn’t have it quite as easy, with a trip from top of the league Caunton. Grantham fought hard and managed to scrape a draw to a good position in the league.
In other results, the ladies’ third team lost 11-7 at home to Attenborough A. A valiant effort was made but ultimately the team of Jill Pindar, Carole Binz, Rachel Pulfree, Laura Dixon, Sue Taylor and Jackie Edgley tasted defeat.
In the second and last mixed doubles match of the weekend, the fourth team lost 9.5-8.5 at home to David Lloyd West Bridgford. A very tight match was played in very good spirit. The team were Colin Walton, Sheena Gordine, Paul Kennedy, Elaine Pulfree, David Todd and Lorraine Walton.
Grantham ladies’ first team faced Bourne 2nd in the Lincolnshire league. The travelling team consisted of Jackie Wilson, Mell Bloodworth, Pam Aust, Liz Frobisher, Sue Rowland and Jill Pinder. Like most of the other weekend matches, this proved very close also, although the result was not in Grantham’s favour
The last Grantham ladies’ fixture saw Lianne Tapson, Wendy Stewart, Jo Carstairs, Yvonne Walker, Mell Milner and Janet Ibberson travel to Magdala in Nottinghamshire, where despite a good effort, the team lost.
Lianne Tapson and Mell Bloodworth travelled to Eastgate to play in the over-35 ladies’ county league. Lincolnshire had the tough test of Nottinghamshire and narrowly won 3-2 after some quality tennis.
