GRANTHAM Tennis Club champions from 2010 travelled to Nottingham Tennis Centre to take on champions from around Nottinghamshire.

In the men’s singles, Sam Bass played well but ultimately lost in the semi-final. The men’s doubles proved a slightly more successful affair with Sam and Richard Cragg winning the event without losing a set.

The ladies’ singles also finished with a great local result, with Lianne Tapson completing the victory in fine fashion. The ladies’ doubles was almost as successful with Lianne and Mell Milner reaching the final in which they ultimately lost to a very strong pair.

The weekend of tennis began with the men’s fifth team facing a travelling Washingborough. The Grantham team comprised captain David Todd, Dave Wright, Mike Roys, Chris Thurlow, David Hall and David Boothman and the match went down to the wire with Grantham winning by one game.

Other matches included the ladies’ summer team. Elaine Maplethorpe led her team out against Caunton and a very closely fought match ensued, with Grantham winning by 10 sets to eight. The rest of the team were Tracey Hobson, Elaine Pulfree, Rachel Pulfree, Janet Ibberson and Cathy Smith.

The last match of the weekend saw the mixed doubles fourth team travel to East Bridgford to play their second match of the season in which they lost 10-8 in a very long contest. The team comprised David Todd, Lorraine Walton, Nigel Birch, Holly Richardson, Colin Walton and Carole Binz.
