Grantham Tennis Club men’s first Aegon team continued their 100 per cent start to the season with another convincing victory, 12-0 away against Derbyshire Tennis Centre.
It was a very good performance from the team comprising Andrew Isaac, Richard Cragg, Richard Surtees and Jon Cummins, and the season is looking bright for them.
Grantham men acquitted themselves well at the weekend, taking on a strong over-50s vets team in a national knockout competition. The opposition from Watford arrived with high hopes, having reached the semi-finals last year.
A tough first round saw Grantham’s first pair of Paul White and Steve Wallace edge out their Watford opponents. After a tight first set won by Grantham 7-6, the second set was closed out 6-1. Karel Meuwissen and Nigel Birch won a very important first set before losing the match in a third set tie-break.
The second round went with form with the Watford first couple beating Karel and Nigel, leaving Paul and Steve needing to win their to seal the victory, which they did in two close sets 6-2/6-4.
A difficult trip to Cumberland LTC in north London awaits in the next round.
Grantham third mixed team played Wollaton at home and won 68 games to 40.
