TENNIS: Grantham club spends weekend in match action

Grantham Tennis Club had a busy weekend with many teams involved in matches.

The Mini Reds B team hosted Deeping on Saturday with the team comprising Alex Harris, Ava Holt, Armaan Ahmed and Phoebe Lyle.

Despite inexperience in match play, the team played very well and battled right to the end. Having won as many matches as the opposition, it all went down to the last round in which Deeping managed to win the last game 10-7 to take overall victory.

The Mini Red A team played Boston A at home a team consisting of Josh Harris, Oliver Anderson, Luke Cullen and Jack Butler. The A team were in the same situation as the Bs as they were at 6-6 until the last round of matches in which they narrowly lost 10-8 in the deciding tie-break.

l A summer mixed match saw Lianne Tapson captain her team of James Drennan, Sophie Fletcher, Simon Cormor, Sarah Patton and Paul White to a comfortable victory.

Sarah and Paul managed to win all of their matches with the other two pairings winning two out of three.

A last mixed winter match also took place with skipper Lianne Tapson’s team comprising James Drennan, Dave Blanchard, Jackie Wilson, Colin Walton and Charlotte Palul.

All three pairings played very well and eased to a very comfortable victory as a team.

l Grantham’s 16-and-under boys played at home to a strong Eastgate side.

This weekend, Grantham’s 16&U boys played a home match against a very strong Eastgate side.

Having won their previous match 12-0, the team of Dominic Newcombe, Michael Cragg, Thomas White and Joe Patton were disappointed to suffer a narrow defeat after playing extremely well.

l A men’s Aegon match was played with a very strong team, consisting of Dominic Newcombe, Michael Cragg, Simon Cormor and Richard Cragg, who faced a strong Rustons side.

The match was tied after two rounds, meaning the game had to go to a shoot-out where Grantham managed to steal victory, winning two out of the match match tie-breaks.
