Grantham Tennis Club ladies went all season unbeaten to become Division One champions of the Lincolnshire Summer League.

The team has benefited from the additional facilities and coaching now available since the start of the year from their performance coach Richard Surtees and in total secured 651 league games.

They began the season playing a good side from Tennis Buddies and secured a 6-3 victory with the third pairing of Mel Milner and Sarah Patton digging in for two matches, winning both on the third set tie-break decider.

An indoor match at Boston followed, which suited the Grantham ladies after having practised on the their indoor facilities at the club. An 8-1 win was secured and a similar scoreline was registered over both Bourne and last year’s divison winners Louth.

A weakened Grantham managed to pinch a 5-4 victory away to Woodhall Spa after a great effort by the third pair of Megan Jones and Liz Stokes who won their last match of the day.

Their penultimate match was the visit of the also unbeaten St James (Grimsby) which turned out to be the title decider.

With a couple of players unavailable, all pairings took to the courts knowing each match win was vital. But an injury to one of Grantham’s players in their middle match caused them to concede it.

Ultimately, a huge match between the first pairs was again won on a tie-break decider and secured a 5-4 victory and with it the Division One title.

A final 8-1 win over Sleaford completed the perfect season and allowed the team to celebrate in style.
