Grantham Tennis Club men’s first team continued their successful start to their Nottinghamshire Men’s County League campaign, going top of the table with three wins from three.
Playing West Bridgford away, they chalked up a convincing 65-43 games victory against a strong home team.
On a beautiful Saturday morning, with perfect sunny playing conditions and great court conditions, Grantham took control from the start, winning the first round 24-12.
Making his first team debut, Nathan Gunning, playing with Simon Cormer, gained confidence from an early victory. National Junior Andrew Isaac played with old hand and big-hitting Richard Smart and the pair won comfortably.
It was left to veterans Paul White and Jon Quinn to seal the win as top pair, and they were the only couple to win all three matches.
Team captain Paul White said: “I am lucky that the strength in depth of the men’s squad gives me options and this bodes well for the long season ahead. What a great start.”
l Grantham ladies’ first team beat Nottingham Castle at the weekend despite one player dropping out after the first round when called to doula duties.
The team consisted of captain Lianne Tapson and Sarah Patton, who only dropped one game throughout the three rounds of matches played, winning 12-0 12-0 11-1, Megan Jones and Liz Williams, and Sally Walker and Sophie Fletcher.
The ladies played some fantastic tennis, wiping the opposition off the floor with the final score; even though they had they had to forfeit two of their matches 12-0, 12-0, they managed to win 57-51 overall – an incredible result for the ladies who never gave up.
Still undefeated in Division Three, and the ladies will be looking to carry on their plans of winning the division and being promoted into the second division.
