TENNIS: Grantham seconds lose for first time

Grantham Tennis Club men’s second string suffered their first defeat of the season at the weekend.

Captained by Mike Roys, the team comprising of Nigel Birch, John Legard, Brian O’Farrell and Bernie Norton lost 6-2 to Louth.

The club’s mixed seconds fared better at Eastwood, winning 57-51 with the team of Lorraine Walton and David Todd, Colin Walton and Sheena Gordine, and Nigel Birch and Sue Cox.

The mixed first team hosted Magdala A and, captained by Lianne Tapson, consisted of Charlotte Palul and Simon Cormer, Richard Cragg and Megan Jones, and James Drennan and Mell Milner. The Grantham side played some great tennis and proved too strong, running out victors by 73-35 to maintain their 100 per cent winning record.

Captained by David Hall, the men’s thirds hosted Southwell who overcame them 68-40. The team were Rob Gibbons and Harry Gibbons, Michael Cragg and Joe Patton, and David Hall and Chris Thurlow.

l Grantham Tennis Club is putting on Christmas activities for youngsters on December 23. Eight years and under Mini Reds will be at Priory Ruskin Academy, 10am-12pm, £10; nine years and under Mini Orange and 10 years and under Mini Greens at Grantham Tennis Club (Arnoldfield), 12pm-2pm, £10; 11-plus Yellow Ball at Grantham Tennis Club 2pm-4pm, £10.
