TENNIS: Grantham under-12 boys given tough test

Grantham Tennis Club boys’ 12-and-under team took on a very strong Woodhall Spa at Arnoldfield over the weekend.

The team, consisting of Jake Gibbons, Luke Griffin, Toby Yates and Nitesh Shyam lost 10-2 on Saturday afternoon.

It proved a very difficult match for the boys and a tough loss, however the scoreline does not reflect how close the matches were.

l The ladies’ fourth team away match against Musters did not go as planned at the week.

The Musters side were very strong and Grantham lost 16 sets to two. The team pairings were Elaine and Rachel Pulfree, Lorraine Walton and Wendy Bland, and Sue Taylor and Karen Pye-Smith.

l Grantham men’s summer veteran first team returned to winning ways on Sunday, beating Scotter 4-0.

The team of Mike Roys, Mark Farmer, Nigel Birch and Rob Isaac played well in very windy conditions and came through without dropping a set.

l The men’s first team played away at Bourne and won 12-0, playing on their unpredictable grass courts. The team comprised Andrew Isaac, Richard Cragg, Richard Surtees and Jonathan Cummins.

The firsts made it three wins out of three for the season with an 8-4 victory at home to Rustons, with the team of Andrew Isaac, Richard Cragg, Michael Cragg and Nathan Gunning.

l The ladies’ third team enjoyed their first match of the summer, away at Newark.

Although the sun was shining, it was very windy. Despite, this they battled hard and won 14-4 in sets. The team were captain Jo Carstairs, Kate Dines, Wendy Bland, Laura Dixon, Anne-Marie Weskamp and Yvonne Walker.

l The 14-and-under girls’ team consisting of Cerys Jones, Lydia Marshall, Madison Cook and Angela Anderson won against Louth in their first match of the Aegon season, 12-0, away.

l The club’s Mini Red A team won 18-14 at home against DL Burton Waters with the team of Hugo Dunn, Toby Cullen, Josh Harris and Imogen Clough.

Meanwhile, the Greens lost to Ruston at home. The team were Jacob Cullen, Jamie Wallace, Christie Halton and Freya Warren.

l The Green B Aegon team played at home this weekend to a strong Tennis Buddies side. The team consisted of Oliver Thomas, Thomas Legard, Eve Kimberley and Jack Street.

With Grantham losing 3-2, they a relied on Jack Street to win his singles to give Grantham the hope they need to get to the shootout tie-break. Jack had no problems in his singles and picked off his opponent 4-2, 4-0.

Eve Kimberley and Oliver Thomas volunteered to play in the shootout in which Tennis Buddies were eventually able to pull away to win the tiebreak 10-7.
