Grantham Water Polo Club fielded its first ever ladies’ squad in a competitive league last weekend.
The newly-formed East Midlands League is the culmination of hard work between Grantham, Hucknall, Northampton and South Derbyshire clubs to create a local competitive opportunity for the growing number of senior girl/lady players at the four clubs.
The Grantham squad of 11 travelled with coach Luke Rees to Northampton where they played their first match of the series and delivered a convincing 16-4 victory over the home side.
Goalscorers India Wilkinson (7), Giorgia Bosworth (4), Millie Stewart (3), Alex Barnett and Amelia Peters notched up the winning score, ably supported by Gaby Cox, Ellie Robinson, Ellie Churchill, Harriet Underwood and Rose Bitowt, with Naya Patel strong and determined as ever as goalkeeper.
With extra pool time available after the match, the hosts invited the Grantham ladies to stay on for a further number of friendly matches – a great example of the positive attitude to the growing interest in ladies’ water polo in the region.
