Three lads from Grantham Water Polo Club were in action representing the Midlands in the Under-18 Inter-Regional team at the International Aquatics Centre in Manchester at the weekend.
Joshua Peters, Cameron Terry and goalkeeper Adam Smith were amongst those selected from East and West Midlands clubs to represent the region. All three were playing young in their age group and will be eligible for the same team next season.
The two-day tournament started with a healthy 14-10 win over Scotland. This was followed by what would prove to be the toughest match of the tournament – a gripping match against Ireland. Midlands found themselves 10-9 up with only 20 seconds remaining, but in a final surge, a last minute goal brought the game to a 10-10 draw.
On day two, the team started out with an early 15-9 win against the South East. Later, despite a 7-4 defeat to Wales 4-7, they went on to a closely fought 14-12 win against the East Region to claim the runners-up position in the tournament behind their feisty Irish adversaries of the previous day.
Grantham Waterpolo Club chairman Sally Dunlop said: “We are very proud of our players and congratulate them on their performance. We have a lot of competitive activity going on in March and are delighted that our players are being selected at Regional level as it gives our younger players a real incentive to succeed as well.
“We would be delighted to hear from any past players who would be interested in helping to coach our younger members, to help bring on the latest generation of new talent.”
