MOTOR RACING: Grantham’s Olly leaves saloon car racers trailing in his wake
Grantham car racer Olly Allen has been enjoying some success, winning the last four rounds of the Burton Power Blue Oval Saloons Championship.
He dominated the last two Classic Touring Car Racing Club meetings at Brands Hatch and Pembrey, leaving the field staring at his exhaust pipe as he set the fastest laps at both circuits.
Olly qualified his Ford Fiesta in pole position at a dry Brands Hatch, with Pre-’93 Touring Car
competitors on the mixed championship grid, such as Sierra Cosworths and BMWS, unable to match the pace of his little hatchback.
In the first race on the Saturday, Olly led from lights to chequered flag, winning by 40 seconds. He led up to the sixth lap in the wet Sunday race, getting close to lapping the field, when the safety car was brought out for several laps due to an incident. Even though the field inevitably closed up, Olly still took the chequered flag by 37 seconds.
Amazingly, Olly managed to qualify in pole again at Pembrey despite suffering a mechanical issue, with a misfire causing the rev limiter to kick in.
He and his pit crew sorted the problem after a couple of hours and Olly then proceeded to win both Saturday and Sunday’s races, again almost lapping the field in the latter in damp conditions.
Olly said he enjoyed the competitiveness of the multi-championship field and only had praise for his little Fiesta: “It was brilliant. The car performed really well, it absolutely sings.”
His next race meeting is at Snetterton next month, with the final rounds taking place at Thruxton at the beginning of October.
