Bassingham racing driver Jack Harvey claimed a double podium finish in the opening rounds of the 2015 Indy Lights Championship at the weekend.

Following a series of successful pre-season tests over the winter, the 2014 Indy Lights vice-champion headed to Florida for rounds one and two of the season.

The Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver kicked off his championship challenge at the 1.9-mile St Petersburg street circuit with a solid qualifying session on Saturday morning, ending the 30-minute session third fastest.

Lining up on the second row of the grid on Saturday afternoon, Jack had a perfect start and made a pass on experienced Formula One driver Max Chilton on the opening lap to move up to P2. He pushed hard throughout the race and defended his position from the rest of the pack; crossing the finish line after 30 laps of racing to claim second position and 25 championship points.

The Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver lined up in third position on the grid for Sunday’s race.

Making another strong start, Jack was up to P2 again by the end of lap one and right on the tail of race leader Ed Jones. Over the course of the next 45 laps, he set a series of strong lap times and continued to push lap after lap, scooping second position and a further 25 points when the chequered flag fell.

Jack, who began his career racing karts at Fulbeck and Brandon, said it had been a good opening race weekend: “We started third and finished second in both races, which is a solid result. However we’ve come to win, so we’re not going to be totally satisfied without a win each time.

“The team has worked really hard over the winter and this weekend’s result reflects this. Our focus now turns to Long Beach next month where we will be looking to build on this weekend’s results and get our first win of the season.”
