Ndlovu goal is highlight of Grantham Town defeat

Barwell 3

Grantham Town 1

Grantham Town were second best in most departments as they suffered their second defeat of the season at Barwell on Tuesday.

Goals from Iyesden Christie, Richard Lavery and Brady Hickey ruined Grantham’s night, with a reply from Lee Ndlovu the highlight of the Gingerbreads’ performance. To add to Town’s woes, substitute Brad McGowan was sent off following a last man challenge.

Grantham started brightly and could have scored early on after Lee Beeson found himself unmarked in the Barwell area. He chose to cross rather than shoot and the danger was cleared by the home side.

The Canaries responded through Alex Tomkinson who first crossed for Christie, narrowly missing the striker’s head and then with a 35-yard free kick that flew close to the bar.

Barwell continued to press and midway through the half, a Hickey drive from outside the box was heading goalwards but saved by keeper Jake Turner.

On the half hour, Ndlovu found Ben Saunders inside the Barwell area but as he shaped to shoot, Scott Lower made a crucial tackle to prevent the shot and former Gingerbread Liam Kay was able to clear.

Three minutes later, Barwell were on the scoresheet. A cross from the left from Callum Woodward found Christie who powered in a header from 10 yards out.

But Grantham levelled the scores five minutes into the second half when Beeson’s free kick into the six yard box found Ndlovu who picked his spot.

However, the home side restored their advantage two minutes when Lavery headed in from a Tomkinson corner kick.

The Canaries sealed victory in the dying minutes after Jack Colley broke down the right. He played the ball through to Hickey who swerved it into the top right corner.

Grantham Town: Turner, Meadows, Storey, Gorman, Humble, Hollingsworth (c), Beeson, Kirby, Ndlovu, Saunders, Emmott. Subs: Read, McGowan, Shaw, Bilyk, Lewis.

Att: 207.
