A Grantham pool player has made the England senior team at the age of 52.

Nigel Dexter became eligible to qualify for the Lincolnshire county seniors’ team when he became 50 and last year played his part in taking them to victory in the national regional finals.

The eight highest-ranked players from each region are able to trial for a spot in the England seniors’ team and, finishing fifth, Nigel headed to Vauxhall Holiday Park in Great Yarmouth to seek out his place.

Played to a Swiss-system format, Nigel got off to nervous start in the trials, losing to Phillip Ledgerton (Essex) 3-2 in his open match.

But this was then followed by five consecutive victories over Steve Crane (Lancashire) 3-2, Gary Hilton (Sussex) 3-2, Yuk San Lee (West Yorkshire) 3-0, Paul Parsons (Northants) 3-1, and Davis Howes (Dorset) 3-2.

Nigel now only needed to win one more match to bag his place on the England team.

His first attempt ended in a 3-0 defeat to Paul Taylor (Gloucestershire), but this failed to dent his confidence and he pulled out a great 3-1 win over Bob Love (Northants), currently ranked second in the country, to earn his coveted England waistcoat.
