Already promoted, Kesteven crowned their fantastic season by claiming the league title on Saturday.

Ks were geared up for their final assault on the league campaign with the visit of Boston to Woodnook. The early morning snowfall had melted to leave the pitch very heavy in places.

Boston kicked off and immediately Kesteven showed their intent by setting off on the attack. It took just four minutes for the home side to open their account. Olly Wood got the ball away from the back off a ruck in his own half. Danny Turner, running with his usual directness, made the initial break. Will Cann was up in support to run in the opening try.

From the restart, Olly Wood gathered and sent a kick deep into the Boston half. The visitors’ full back was caught in possession by Wood and the supporting pack were up quickly for Odams to steal the ball and score. This time Cann added the goal points.

Kesteven repeated the dose a minute later and this time it was Parker who straightened the line to find the rampaging Cowley storming up on his inside for a great try. Cann again converted.

It took a little while for the next score to arrive and again it was Turner who made the crucial impact to send Goodrich in for his first try. Cann kicked the extra points.

Wood scored a great individual try before Goodrich added his second. Cann converted both to take the score to an impressive 40-0 lead at half time.

The weather turned from spring sunshine to winter hailstones just after the break but still Ks kept the momentum going. Richard Armstrong had a storming run away from a maul on halfway and just before he got to the line he was caught, but the ever present Turner was on hand to complete the try.

Turner turned provider with yet another fine break which was finished off by Goodrich for his hat trick try. Cann converted both.

Cowley was next to score and this was a very special moment. Olly Wood saw the big lock out on the right wing and judged a perfect kick into his path. Cowley caught it cleanly and raced away for the try of the match. Cann again converted to take the lead up to 61-0.

Boston continued to compete against the odds and they were rewarded with a score. A Kesteven handling move broke down in midfield and Boston hacked the loose ball through for a try.

The final word fell to Kesteven and it was appropriate that it was all about Turner. Boston were bundled into touch near halfway. Turner seized the ball and quickly threw to stand-in captain Sheardown who ran for the line.

When he was about to be tackled, he found Turner up in support to finish the scoring with a try in the corner to seal a resounding victory and a perfect end to a highly successful champions’ campaign.

Kesteven: Whittaker, Miles, Cann, Goodrich, Hughes, Parker, Wood, Odams, Sheardown, Purvis, Pert, Cowley, Woolerton, Armstrong, Turner. Reps: J. Dingley, C. Dingley, Osborne.
