RUGBY: Kesteven battle out pre-season workout at Sleaford
Kesteven took a squad of 25 to Sleaford for a pre-season trial match.
The game was split into four quarters to allow the coaches to have a look at a number of options, with the first match against Spalding coming up on Saturday.
Honours were pretty even throughout the day. In the first period, both sides were finding their feet, with Sleaford enjoying the early possession. They opened the scoring following a scrum close to the line.
The Kesteven response was positive with the forwards making some good ground through Will Pert, before Tom Price, the new second team captain, created space with a neat off-load. Phil Jordan finished off the move with a try in the corner.
In the second quarter, both coaches made a number of changes and again neither side was able to get on top. The highlight was a fine try by Ian Charles who belied his veteran status to race in from 30 metres for a fine score. Price’s conversion was good. Keiran Taylor added a trademark try from far out in the third quarter after good work by Dan Turner.
It was a good workout before the serious business starts this week with the preliminary round of the Lincolnshire Cup against Spalding. This match is at Woodnook with a 3pm kick-off.
The club is gearing up for the Rugby World Cup next month. England matches will be shown on the big screen in the club, and there will be supporting entertainment.
Kesteven club secretary Bill Berridge said: “We plan to make Woodnook the place to be when England play.”
