Oundle 41

Kesteven’s hopes of progress to the final stages were dashed at a very windy Woodnook on Saturday.

Once again injuries and unavailability forced the home side into a number of changes, but it was still expected that they would compete well with the visitors from Northamptonshire.

The wind was always going to have a big impact on the match. Kesteven had first use of the wind but they found it difficult to judge the direction and important touch kicks failed to find the target.

Oundle played good rugby in the first half, keeping tha ball alive with some very good offloads and strong running by their back row and centres.

The home defence was tested and eventually cracked when some good inter passing by the visitors led to a try in the corner. This was followed by a second try from a midfield break, then a simple penalty opened up a 13 point lead.

The home team did have some territory following some good running by Turner and Whittaker but the visitors tackled well and repelled these attacks.

Just before the interval, Oundle dealt the killer blow with a third try, this time by their impressive number eight. This try was converted to make the half time score 20-0.

Turning to face the wind, Kesteven knew they had to step up their game to have any chance but they were undone just five minutes after break. Kesteven had a scrum close to their own line but pressure by the Oundle pack led to a mix-up in the Ks defence and the visitors bagged their fourth try. This was converted to effectively end the contest.

Despite this, Kesteven kept trying to play rugby. Pirie and Turner in the pack made inroads and Draper was lively at scrum half ,while Whittaker as always looked dangerous.

But just when it looked like a score was coming, the move would break down and Oundle were effective in finishing. They ran in two more tries from long range. Both were converted for a thumping win to the visitors.

Kesteven: Whitaker, Miles, Taylor, Wood, Hughes, Parker, Draper, Odams, Sheardown, Purvis, Pert, Cowley, Pirie, Armstrong, Turner. Reps: Vincent, Betts, P. Jordan.
