Kesteven 34

Kesteven made the trip to Derbyshire for the return fixture with fourth place Chesterfield Panthers.

Ks again reshuffled the side with Betts, Goodrich, Whittaker and Parker returning to the backs, and Woolerton and Dent going into the back row.

Chesterfield got off to a good start and opened the scoring after nine minutes with a fine try by their full back. He broke a couple of tackles to go in under the posts. The extra points were kicked successfully.

This early setback did not upset the visitors and the pack gradually got on top. First Addlesee picked up from the base of a scrum and was stopped just short. The pack gathered round in support and Gavin Purvis picked up to score..

The dominance of the Kesteven forwards was causing problems for Chesterfield and their number six was sent to the sin bin for failing to release the ball.

Kesteven immediately took advantage and, from a scrum, Turner picked up to score. Whittaker converted to give Ks the lead.

From the restart, Turner fielded the ball and made a great break. Goodrich was up in support and scored out wide to give a healthy lead going into the break. But there was still time for Chesterfield to reduce the deficit with a penalty on the stroke of half time, making the score 17-10 to Kesteven.

At the break, Osborne replaced Odams then, 10 minutes into the half, Sayle came on for Cowley.

Chesterfield drew first blood in the second half with a long range penalty from their excellent kicker, before Kesteven raised their game.

Whittaker popped over a penalty to settle his side, before Sayle finished off a move started by Turner and carried on by Tom Miles. Sayle was up in support and scored the bonus point try. Whittaker converted to open up a 14 point lead.

Addlesee scored the final try just before the end to round off a fine display by Kesteven. Whittaker’s kick was good.

The win keeps Kesteven just one point behind leaders Loughborough. This week Kesteven welcome Grimsby to Woodnook.

Kesteven: Whittaker, Miles, Betts, Goodrich, Draper, Parker, Addlesee, Odams, Sheardown, Purvis, Tweddle, Cowley, Dent, Wooleron, Turner. Reps: Sayle, Osborne, Danford.
