NLD Shield Round 1

Kesteven 36

Sleaford 17

KESTEVEN gained some revenge over their local rivals to open the season, having missed out on promotion to their neighbours last season.

The game started well for the home side with plenty of early attacking phases. They were patient enough to recycle the ball until a gap appeared around the fringes and scrum half Olly Wood shot over for the opening try. Turner converted for a 7 – 0 lead.

From the restart K’s rushed a couple of passes before debut centre Cam Hudson did the sensible thing and boomed a long clearance kick down the pitch.

Keiran Taylor followed the kick up and made a great tackle on the Sleaford full back deep in their territory. Jamie Flear was not far behind and turned the ball over to release the supporting Hudson who drew the final man and passed to Sam Durrance to score under the posts. Turner again converted to make it 14 – 0.

K’s continued to attack but were unlucky to lose captain Phil Jordan to a dislocated elbow following a late tackle. Ken Lines came on in replacement and Andy Brown took over as captain.

Kesteven lost some discipline after the change and quickly conceded three penalties which Sleaford converted to bring them back into the match before half-time.

Kesteven turned round with a lead of just 5 points.

In the second half Kesteven were quick to score when Cameron Hudson, on his first team debut, sent Jake Hughes clear on the wing for a fine try. Turner again added the conversion.

Hudson retained the role of provider this time putting Goodrich clear for a great try again converted by Turner.

Kesteven were on top now and Dan Turner added a penalty and a converted try. Then Hudson again provided the scoring pass for Goodrich to race in for his second try, converted by Parker, before Sleaford were able to cross the line for a try of their own.

The conversion took the final score to Kesteven 36 Sleaford 16.

This was a fine start to the season. Goodrich was named man-of-the-match followed closely by Hudson who had a fine debut in setting up three of the tries.

One area of concern was the three yellow cards picked up by Kesteven players. This is one area that coach will be addressing at training this week.
