Kesteven played at home against a team that beat them in the semi-finals of the same competition last year.
Ks were hoping to recapture the team spirit from last week’s win away to Moderns and they didn’t disappoint.
The first half was tight with neither side able to break through although Ks had the better of the forward play and the all-round team defence was superb. Some great handling put Botham away, but a great tackle stopped his run just short of the Dronfield line. This pressure and fierce tackling began to wear Dronfield down and Ks went into half time feeling like they had finished the half on top.
The second half saw Ks continue to pile pressure on Dronfield, both in attack and defence, and when Dronfield did look like breaking through they met Archer at full back who stopped anything that came his way.
Ks mounted a great attack which ended with Pirie crossing the line only to be held up. From the resulting scrum, Pirie picked up at eight and crashed under the posts, giving Moore an easy conversion.
From the kick-off, Ks continued to dominate the contact zones which moved them quickly back into the Dronfield half. This led to Simpson at scrum half making a fantastic break to dive over and score a great try in the corner.
Dronfield had a number of attacks and continued to make ground through their strong back row unit but defiant tackling kept them at bay.
Frustration crept into the Dronfield side when they lost the ball whilst attacking in the Ks 22 yard area. A moment of ill-discipline resulted in Kesteven winning a penalty which Moore took quickly and then ran the whole length of the pitch, only to be stopped 10 yards short by a superb Dronfield covering tackle. From the tackle Dronfield kicked the ball straight to skipper Eagle who found himself in open play and able to run in the final try. Moore converted on the final whistle.
