Grantham Town 0

Ramsbottom United 1

A single second-half goal was enough to give the visitors a slender victory over Grantham Town on Saturday.

In a wind-affected game, the Gingerbreads had it behind them in the first half but did not take advantage.

Grantham had early chances through Liam Read and Lee Ndlovu but to no avail.

The two teams were fairly evenly matched, with Town perhaps just having the slight edge over Ramsbottom in the first 45 minutes.

Grantham’s best chances of the first half came in the 26th and 29th minute.

First Ben Saunders headed just over the bar from a Jake Wholey cross, and then Wholey curled a left footed free kick around the United wall but into the side netting.

The home side appeared to have lost their shape somewhat after the break, whilst Ramsbottom looked confident and dangerous with the wind at their backs.

But the goal came out of the blue on 53 minutes, with substitute David Kuba-Kuba firing an unstoppable rocket of a shot from the edge of the Grantham box, with Town keeper Jake Turner nothing more than a spectator.

The Gingerbreads’ best chance of an equaliser was squandered. Confusion between Ndlovu and Saunders as to who should shoot whilst on the edge of the six-yard box, saw the latter finally put boot to ball but it bobbled hopelessly wide.

The visitors could have doubled their lead in the 84th minute when Lee Gaskell’s seemingly innocuous-looking long range effort surprised everyone and came off the post.

Grantham’s final chance to snatch a share of the points came in the 87th minute, but United keeper Grant Shenton smothered the ball before Liam Hurst could let fly.

Grantham Town: Turner, Hurst (Rawdon, 89), Wholey, Purcicoe (c), Hellewell, Miveld (Emmott, 55), Hollingworth, Lewis, Read, Saunders, Ndlovu. Subs not used: Johnson, Duffy, Rhule.
