Last weekend, the most promising young squash players in the country travelled to Sheffield for the staging of the fifth England Squash and Racketball Under-11 Championships.

New champions were guaranteed as both of last year’s winners (boys and girls) have moved up an age group. It was an exciting weekend, with almost all of the top 20 nationally-ranked players participating from more than 20 counties.

For many it was their first experience of national level competition, whilst for others their sole thought was to become England champion.

Seven-year-old Louie Truman, of Grantham Squash and Racketball Club, fell into the first category, and was one of the youngest players in the tournament.

He played very well on Saturday, narrowly losing his first match 3-2, and his second 3-1, but he dug deep in the third and won it 3-1. Playing two more matches on Sunday, he lost the first and then outplayed his opponent in the second, winning convincingly 3-0.

Louie’s parents, Nigel and Rae Truman, were over the moon with his efforts and offered a huge thanks to his coach Martin Gibson for all his help and valued support: “Without him. this would not have been possible.”

Louie plays at Grantham Squash and Racketball Club on Harlaxton Road where there are six courts available for both disciplines.
