Cliffedale Chandlers Table Tennis Club Jjnior teams ended their Nation Junior League season last weekend with much improved performances, but still with plenty of work to do.

They faced tough opposition from day one back in October last year to the final day last month.

The two teams had contrasting campaigns, with the B team putting in a tremendous effort on the last day of Division Three. After an early 5-1 defeat to the eventual champions Bedford Modern A, Chandlers B soon hit their stride to defeat 4-2 a Lillington D who started the day above the Chandlers team with a two-point cushion.

Their next match ended in another defeat, this time 4-2 to home side Westfield B – a result that proved crucial to the final placings. With second place within touching distance, this defeat moved Westfield above the Chandlers team of Viren Panchal, Thomas Ford, Trafford Mason and Samuel Bailey.

If they were to stand a chance of clinching second, they would have to win the last two matches and hope that Westfield B didn’t win again. But hope soon faded with a 3-3 draw against Bedford Modern B and Westfield winning their next match, but a 5-1 defeat of St Neots C rounded of the day and clinched third position for the Chandlers team who were all making their debuts in this season’s competition.

Meanwhile in Division Two, Chandlers A were hoping for better luck than day three but they found it just as tough going.

The team, consisting of Divya Prabhu, Helen Turley, Benjamin Rigby and Ashley Willows, refused to let an early 4-2 defeat to St Neots B ruin their determination to not finish with the wooden spoon in the dreaded sixth place.

As with the B team, a crucial 4-2 win in the tie against the team above them (Westfield A) took them out of last place and into fifth, but only by a point.

With two further 5-1 defeats to WDHA Juniors and Lillington B, and a 3-3 draw with Lillington C, it went down to other results – but with Westfield A losing their last two matches it meant the Chandlers A quartet hung on to fifth spot.
