Three Cliffedale Chandlers Table Tennis Club players represented Lincolnshire in Division 2A at the Junior County Championships at Draycott TTC in Derbyshire.

Alexandra Robinson, Benjamin Rigby and Trafford Mason swapped the red of Cliffedale Chandlers for the green and black of Lincolnshire to take on county teams from Durham, Lancashire, Cheshire and Derbyshire. The Lincs team was completed by Jack Bradley and Chloe de la Fontaine.

The day started with a tough tie against an extremely strong Durham 2nd side who were undefeated after the first weekend’s play last October, and they showed why – beating the Lincs team 9-1 (Benjamin Rigby getting the win) – but that result did not do justice to the team effort shown. Six of the 10 ties went to a deciding fifth set and, had it not been for a bit of bad luck, Lincs could have claimed the win, if not a draw.

Next up was Cheshire but the manner of the loss in the previous tie affected Lincs who lacked confidence to begin with in this tie. But a couple of wins to stay in it steadied the nerves slightly and they managed to draw the match 5-5 (Alexandra getting two wins, Benjamin one win).

There was no rest for the Lincs quintet who were then straight into action against a very strong Lancs side. Alexandra was the only Lincs player to register a win in this tie as they slumped to a second 9-1 defeat.

The last match of the day saw them face Derbys but the exertions of the previous ties left the team exhausted and they crashed to an 8-2 defeat (Alexandra and Benjamin both claiming wins).

Alexandra finished with four wins from eight matches, and Benjamin had three from eight, but all five Lincs players gave their all, and their effort and sportsmanship should be commended.
