Grantham College student Tom Jarvis picked up some good results but could not prevent England finishing in a disappointing 17th position at the European Youth Championships.

Originally from Skegness, Jarvis, who is reserve for the Team GB table tennis team for Rio, competed alongside Luke Savill and Alex Ramsden in Zagreb.

And he won three out of his five matches in the group stage as England beat Poland 3-1, but lost 3-0 to Italy and 3-1 to Russia.

A 3-1 defeat to Greece followed in the first play-off round, with Jarvis losing his two matches.

He was back on form in the 3-2 victory over Switzerland, his two wins being backed up by Savill taking the deciding match.

All three team members then won a match apiece as England came from 2-0 down to defeat Israel 3-2.

It left England in the play-offs for positions 17-20 and they continued their strong finish to the competition, as all three boys again won one match in a 3-2 victory over Sweden, followed by a 3-0 triumph over Austria.

Jarvis then missed the individual competitions to team up with the Olympics squad for training and preparation for Rio.
