Three members of Grantham Tennis Club played a part in the fortunes of teams from separate counties at the weekend.

The club was fortunate to be hosting a round of the LTA National Inter-County Girls’ 18-and-under Cup competition on their indoor courts at Arnoldfield.

Grantham coach Richard Surtees captained the Leicestershire under-18 girls who were contesting Division 5B with Oxfordshire, Hereford & Worcestershire and Shropshire, in a bid to move up to Division 5A.

And Richard helped the girls to convincing victories over all three opposition teams to earn a precious promotion.

Richard said: “I am very proud of the Leicestershire girls who won 24 out of 27 matches throughout the weekend to gain promotion.

“And to do it at Grantham makes it even more special.”

Meanwhile, the Lincolnshire girls’ 18-and-under team travelled to Shrewsbury to contest Division 5A of the same competition.

Amongst the team’s ranks was Grantham Tennis Club 17-year-old Megan Jones who has rightfully earned her place on the county squad with a marked improvement over the last couple of years.

But, unfortunately, Megan’s team was unable to find that special winning formula, and had to concede relegation to Division 6.

Another of Grantham’s players, Andrew Isaac, already experienced at county level, represented Lincs 18-and-under boys in Division 3 and enjoyed success with good wins in both singles and doubles that helped the team to gain promotion to Division 2.

Club coach Richard was clearly over the moon with the weekend’s play. He said: “From a personal and club perspective, this weekend has been brilliant.

“For Megan to have no county opportunity in the past and, at 17, to earn a place in the team is a fantastic achievement.

“Andrew also played a big part in the boys’, gaining promotion to Division 2 – it doesn’t get much better than that.”
