TENNIS: Grantham ladies keep title hopes alive

Grantham Tennis Club ladies hosted a very young but experienced Boston team in a match that would seal the league title for the visitors or keep the home side in contention for it.

And so it was a very tense affair from the outset and after two rounds the two sides were tied at three matches apiece, and so it all went down to the final round.

Grantham took the first match and Boston the second, which left the first pairing of Yasmin Clarke and Melanie Bloodworth to dig deep and try to secure the win against what was also the visitors’ best pairing.

Some very good tennis ensued and eventually Grantham won 7-5, 6-3 to seal overall victory and keep them in with a shout of the title. The team also comprised Sophie Fletcher, Ella Tapson, Megan Jones and Sarah Patton.

l The ladies’ fourth team suffered a 12-6 defeat to a strong Woodthorpe side in their last game of the summer season at home this weekend.

The team consisted of Elaine Maplethorpe and Carole Binz, Lorraine Walton and Jackie Thomson, and Elaine Pulfree and Rachael Pulfree.

l Grantham beat Collingham 96 games to 21 in the Lincoln and District Mixed Doubles Leaague with the team of Jon Quinn and Melanie Bloodworth, Jonathan Cummins and Sophie Fletcher, and Ivo Marsik and Liz Stokes.

l The men’s first team won 6-3 against a strong Boston A side with the team of Richard Cragg and Andrew Isaac, Jon Cummins and Richard Smart, and Paul White and Tom White.

l A difficult season opening match was endured by Grantham’s 12-and-under boys against Boston.

The Grantham side consisted of James Peace, Jacob Cullen, Jamie Wallace and Oliver Thomas.

l Rob Isaac, Nigel Birch, Jo Jones and Sue Cox played last weekend in their Indoor Nottingham League opener against Woodthorpe.

Rob and Nigel won their doubles 13-3, Sue and Jo lost their doubles 5-8, whilst in the mixed Jo and Rob lost 6-9, and Nigel and Sue won 8-4, for a 32-24 overall win for the Grantham side. A good start to their campaign to win the division this year.

l Battling to avoid relegation, Grantham men’s second string recorded their first win of the season, defeating Ravenshead 33-19.

The team comprised Simon Cormor and Alistair Le Bas, Richard Smart and Phil Laughton, and Ed Milner and Karel Meuwissen.

l In the Nottingham Indoor League at the weekend, a Grantham side consisting of Richard Cragg, Jonathan Cummins, Lianne Tapson and Ella Tapson suffered a close and harsh defeat to a strong Musters side.

l Andrew Isaac made it through to the last round of qualifying in the British Tour.

With the event being Grade One, a lot of top players from the UK have travelled to take part in such a big event and to make it to the main draw would be a great success for the Grantham player. With the final qualifying match on Tuesday, Andrew will be hoping to make it through.
