Grantham Tennis Club men’s first team finished their Notts Winter League campaign with a comfortable win at home against Woodthorpe.

A first round which went the way of the home team, 32-4, was swiftly followed by a comfortable second round, before finishing the match easy 92-16 winners.

Not only did this conclude the team’s winter league campaign, it also left them guaranteed to claim a top two spot and promotion to the Notts First Division.

A very happy captain Paul White said: “The team today, and other men’s first team squad members who played a part including Jon Cummins, Simon Cormer, club performance coach Richard Surtees, James Drennan, Alistair Lebas, Nathan Gunning and Ivo Marsic, should all be really pleased with the hard work put into training and on match days. I am very happy with the effort of everyone. Well done.”

l At the weekend, Grantham’s men’s second team played their fourth match of the season, and were looking for their fourth consecutive win.

The team, consisting of Kane Goswell and Nigel Birch, Ivo Marsik and Ben Catlin, Mike Roys and Martin Garrett, travelled to Musters to play on their lightning fast astroturf.

With the surface being wet and slippery, the ball hit the surface, stayed low and skidded through very quickly, making rallies very difficult to achieve.

Unfortunately for Grantham, the Musters side were a strong team and, with the home advantage, they managed to edge the win to end the visitors’ winning streak.

With two games remaining, Grantham’s second string still have a good chance of being promoted.

l Grantham 2nd mixed winter team found themselves up against a strong Caunton side who they overcame 59-49.

The teams and scores were: Pam Aust and Rob Isaac won all three of their matches, score 23-13; Liz Isles and Mark Ottey drew one and lost two, score 16-20; Ros and Peter Elphick drew two and won one, score 20-16.
