TENNIS: Grantham mixed fourths finish second to gain promotion


Grantham Tennis Club’s fourth mixed team played their last winter match away at Attenborough on Sunday.

The team of Martin Garratt and Sheena Gordine, Peter and Ros Elphick, and David Todd and Lorraine Walton won 72 games to 36.

It was another great result for the team who have won five out of six matches and finished second in the league to guarantee promotion next winter

The men’s first team maintained their 100 per cent record in the regional league with victory over Lutterworth at home. The team of Andrew Isaac, Richard Cragg, Richard Surtees and Jonathan Cummins triumphed 10-2.

Grantham A team beat Grantham B team 8-2 at the weekend. The A team consisted of Leon De Roca, Harry Chambers, Alex Harris and Theo Milner, whilst the B team were Ben Rogers, Charlie Morley, Polly Cullen and Ava Holt.

Grantham under-12 boys’ B team played against a strong Sleaford side at the weekend.

Jamie Wallace, Aaron Fleckney, Joshua Eyles, Alfie Carrington were the boys that played. Grantham were tied after the singles matches, 2-2. The doubles both went into third set tie-breaks to decide the game, unfortunately Grantham lost both.

Isabella Chapman, Martha Patton, Eve Kimberley and Megan Rowley made their debut in yellow ball competition, with the Grantham girls coming out on top.

Grantham A team played this weekend against a strong Rustons side.

Grantham consisted of Jacob Cullen, Nitesh Shyam, Jamie Wallace and Aaron Fleckney, but Rushtons proved to be too strong for the Grantham side, with great performance from both sides.

Grantham Orange team played against a strong Boston A side at the weekend.

The team comprised Hugo Dunn, Josh Harris, Toby Cullen and Arnaan Bajaj who earned a well-deserved 5-5 draw.

The women’s Aegon county team continued their winning streak with a second match win, this time against St James’s.

Sarah Patton, Sophie Fletcher, Megan Jones and Sam Parker all played well in their singles to go 4-0 up, then in the doubles both pairs won comfortably to give Grantham a convincing 6-0 win.
