TENNIS: Grantham over-50 men reach last 16 of national knockout
Grantham Tennis Club put a strong side together for the first round of the men’s National Over-50s Knockout Tournament against Boston.
The first round of matches saw captain Paul White and Karel Meuwissen winning against the Boston first pair of Mike Burnett and Andrew Clamp, 6-4, 6-0, whilst Rob Isaac and Nigel Birch were unlucky to lose a close match 7-6, 6-3.
The second round again saw Paul and Karel win their match easily 6-1, 6-0, and Rob and Nigel gained a vital half, drawing one set all 6-3, 4-6, which was enough for the Grantham team to secure a win and a last 16 round match against the number one seeds Leicestershire.

l Paul White played in his first International Tennis Federation men’s over-50 tennis tournament at Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club last week.
With a bye in the first round, Paul faced the number seven seed and over-50 world number 496 Timothy Agutter in the last 16. In good conditions and on familiar red clay courts, the match was a one-sided affair with Paul winning 6-1, 6-1, to progress to the quarter-finals.
Waiting was number one seed, over-50s British number one and world number 15 Mark Roe, pictured (right) with Paul. Having broken the number one seed in the first game to go 1-0 up, a number of tight games followed which went the way of Mark who won the first set 6-1.
The second set started evenly and was pretty much in the balance at 3-2, before Mark pulled away to win the match 6-1, 6-2.
l Grantham TC did not enjoy their first summer match in a new league, suffering a 17-1 defeat to Mansfield. It was a bravely fought battle from the Grantham side, but the Mansfield team were just too strong.
However, Matt Street and David Dowty did give 100 per cent to secure their only set, with the new tie-breaker rule.
Other team members were John Walker, Adam Bramley, David Todd and Chris Roughan.
