TENNIS: Grantham veterans enjoy comfortable victory
Grantham Tennis Club veterans’ first team entertained St James, of ,Grimsby last Sunday.
Blustery and at times wet conditions made fluid play difficult, but with home advantage Grantham started the tie with Paul White and Dave Blanchard scoring an easy first round victory (6-1 6-2) against St James’ second couple. Rob Isaac and Nigel Birch, playing against a very good first couple, overturned a 4-2 deficit in the first set to win it 7-5, and closing out the second set 6-4.
With a two rubber advantage, the second round was an easier affair with Paul and Dave winning 6-3 6-3 against a slightly deflated first pair, and Rob and Nigel also winning 6-1 6-3 to conclude what turned out to be a comfortable victory for the Grantham side.

Needing to win the last round by more than seven games to secure victory against a strong Lady Bay side looked a tall order. But with all three pairs finding their form, Paul and James won 7-5, Michael Cragg and Adam Tapson recorded an impressive 6-2 victory against the second pair, and Rob Start and Joe Patton achieved a great 7-5 victory over the experienced first pair to seal a close but well deserved 57-51 game win.
