TRIATHLON: Belvoir Tri Club compete far and wide

Belvoir Triathlon Club members enjoyed a competitive and busy weekend.

Mick Oliver, Rob Spashett, Neal Burnham and Kevin Gench took to water and land, competing in mix of individual events including an aquathon, duathlon and triathlon, representing the club in Bedford, Ipswich and locally too.

Mick Oliver did the Belvoirs proud competing in two events, The Bedford Triathlon and the final of the Delta Simons Aquathon 2015 Series. He finished a creditable second overall and first veteran at Bedford.

Mick said. “I spotted a GB age group triathlete before the swim so slipstreamed him the whole 750 metre swim, which brought me out of the water in under 11 minutes.”

Mick took took the lead on the bike, and into the 5km cross-country run, but he was overtaken in the final 2km.

The previous Wednesday, Mick took part in the final of the Delta Simons Aquathon series final at South Hykeham.

The aquathon comprised of five events running on Wednesday evening from May until September. The events, which consists of an 800m swim followed by a 3km run, were held throughout the summer and Mick put in another top performance, setting a personal best to finish second on the night and third overall in the championship.

Belvoir Tri Club members Neal Burnham, Dawn Padovano and Rob Spashett were among the 57,000 runners who competed in the Great North Run.

Neal finished the half marathon in 1.49.33 and Rob crossed the line in 2.06.05, a sterling run from Rob as this was his attempt at the distance.

Rob said, “It was a fantastic experience and something I wish I had done sooner, and shows how much work I need to do for the Outlaw Half Triathlon in 2016.”

Kevin Gench took part in the Ipswich Duathlon held at Alton Water, hosted by Ipswich Triathlon Club. The race was over a sprint distance and comprised a 5km run and a 20km bike ride, finished off with another 5km run.

Kevin completed the course in a very respectable 1.27.26, placing him in first position in his category (Cat I) and 25th overall.

This weekend, Belvoir Tri Club will be competing in The Equinox 24 hour runin the grounds of Belvoir Castle.

Team co-ordinator Sophie Stanley said: “As this event is on our doorstep, it would be great to see supporters come along and give us some cheers.”
