TRIATHLON: Belvoir Tri Club’s Hunt overcomes the nerves

Sophie Hunt, from Belvoir Tri Club, was amongst 98 competitors on the early start line of the Cambridge Sprint Triathlon at Mepal Outdoor Centre in the heart of the Cambridgeshire fens on Sunday.

The sprint triathlon consisted of a 750m open water swim in the clear waters of the sailing lake, followed by a 21km bike ride through picturesque villages and a 5km run on traffic-free trails.

This was Sophie’s first attempt at an open water sprint triathlon and, despite the nerves, she managed to hold a good position in the water. The cycle leg went equally as well, seeing Sophie gain several places over the circuit, putting her in a good position to start the challenging run, an out-and-back course consisting a mix of cross country and farm tracks.

Sophie was the third lady to cross the line in a time of 1hr 23min 55sec and won her category too.

Sophie commented: “Normally the run is my best phase, but I found the terrain hard going today, and quite energy-sapping. The run gave me a good opportunity to spy my competition. I only saw two women in front of me, but had no idea how many had already finished or how close the ones behind were.”

“I really enjoyed this event and am looking forward to the next one. I feel very lucky to have such great support from my family and from all the coaches and friends at Belvoir Tri club who make triathlon such a fun sport.”

Belvoir Tri Club hosted their third GO TRI triathlon at the weekend, with 27 participants competing.

Tristar winners: Millie Doubleday, Megan Tremain, Billy Reed, Adam Taylor; senior winners: Chris Masters (M), Sophie Stanley (F).

The Belvoir Tri GO TRI events are hosted locally at The Meres leisure centre by Belvoir Tri Club, and are reasonably priced, with manageable distances which have been purposely-designed for beginners. Visit www.belvoirtriclub.co.uk
