Grantham Running Club’s Jez Page was represented Team GB at the ITU World Championships in Motala in Sweden in his favourite event – the long distance one.

The organisers decided it was too cold to go for the full 4km open water swim even with wetsuits, so somewhat to Jez’s surprise, having trained in English lakes and finding the temperature refreshing, they reduced it to a mere 1,500m.

Unable to make his stamina count in the swim, Jez exited the pool a few minutes down on target which he more than made up for in an impressive bike leg, averaging 23mph over a 75km route.

But Jez’s injury-hit training took its toll on the 30km run leg when he ran out of steam before the halfway mark, denying him a top 10 finish.

Jez was delighted with his bike time which made him the third fastest in the world in his age group, describing it as “better than he dared hope for”, and was philosophical about his run, reckoning he had a strategy to “nail it” the next time. He was also pleased with his overall time of 7hr 20min 4sec.
