King’s School student Tom Cotton tried his hand against the seniors in the Castle Howard Triathlon and finished an amazing 27th overall from 152 finishers.

At 15 years of age, Tom was the youngest competitor in the Sprint Plus Distance event that included a couple of GB international triathletes.

Undaunted, the Brandon teenager completed the 800m open water swim in 15min 54sec, cycled 48km in 1.39.58 and finished with a 43.43 run, for a total time including transitions of 2.42.00.

Tom’s mother Jo said: “We were really proud of Tom when he came out of the lake fourth, as the first two were in the GB team, and then there was a man, then we looked up and there was Tom.

“He really enjoyed this competition and wants to go on to do more.”

Tom is a member of the Grantham Water Polo Club, Newark Swimming Club and Kesteven Rugby Club, but as far as triathlon goes, he just trains alone – and it seems to be working just fine.
