Belvoir Triathlon Club’s Gerry Hyde represented Great Britain at the European Duathlon Championships in Spain.

He was amongst 400 Age Group athletes from all over Europe who made their way to Soria, a small city near Madrid.

The weather over the weekend was cold, dry and windy, making racing conditions testing.

Gerry raced on the Sunday morning, competing in the Sprint Distance. This was a non-drafting event and consisted of one 5km run lap, followed by a 20.55km undulating bike ride and a 2.5km sprint to the finish line.

One of the reasons Soria was chosen for the duathlon championship was the likelihood of the run section going through the centre of the city, making it a very attractive venue for both the public and competitors.

Gerry finished in the top five within the British camp and earned 13th place overall for his category in a time of 1hr 14min 50sec.

Gerry commented: “At 53, I was one of the oldest competitors in the age group so I was really pleased with my result. The wind, hills and altitude really held back the times for everyone, but I think the course suited me.

“Our club does a lot of run and bike training on hills, so thankfully I was well prepared for the course. I somehow managed to finish strongly and made up several places on the second run, and it was a shame to miss out on a top 10 finish by 14 seconds, but I left it too late to close the gap. A lesson learnt for the next time.

“I have been fortunate to qualify for a number of World and European duathlon events and this one in Soria was the best to date – good organisation and a great team spirit.”
