WHEELCHAIR TENNIS: Grantham club’s Shaw wins two national titles
James Shaw became quad singles and doubles champion at the National Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Gloucester last weekend.
James, from Nottingham, trains at Grantham Tennis Club and is coached by Martyn Whaite from Loughborough.
In the singles, James progressed from the round robin stage despite being beaten by Richard Green, from Essex, in three very tight sets. Two victories were enough to see James through to the final in which he was to face Green for a second time.
After discussions with his coach, James decided to change his tactics. Instead of trying to out-rally his opponent, he went for more power in an attempt to out-hit the Essex man. Just like the previous encounter, this one went to three sets, but it was James who triumphed 6-4 4-6 10-3
There was still more tennis to be played. James teamed up with Green in the doubles in which they overcame Ashley Davis and Darren Mitchell 6-1 6-1
World number 31 James said: “This has been a massive year for me, especially knowing how close I am to the top players. I’ve had some really close games against top 10 players and can hopefully just keep on improving going into next year.”
