Newark U12 League

Collingham Cougars 2

Barrowby Magpies 5

Barrowby Magpies returned to the top of the league in a top of the table clash but it was a determined home team that got off to a flier.

A defensive mix-up led to an own goal for their first and then Cougars striker Hatton slotted home unmarked at the back post from a corner.

Barrowby looked shaken but certainly not stirred and, with a battle on their hands, the visitors started to impressively win many of the first and second balls.

With the next goal likely to be decisive, Barrowby’s French ran into the box and was tripped, leaving the referee no option but to point to the spot. It was French himself who took the spot-kick, scoring in off the right hand upright.

With both keepers making fine saves, the home side held on to go in 2-1 up at half time, Temple-Fielder looking assured in the Magpies goal.

After the break the Barrowby lads continued to compete to a high level, all working hard to bring about a change in fortunes. And with the hard work came more chances, Gibson hitting a post and Lockton striking the crossbar.

Polzin, Wade and French continued to compete well aerially, winning the majority of balls in the middle of the park.

The equaliser was a terrific goal. Poole stepped out from defence and his interception allowed him to play Gibson in. With Gibson in on goal, his eyes lit up and he smashed the ball into the top corner.

Barrowby now had the wind in their sails and completely took the game by the scruff of its neck, both Polzin and Poole showing strong leadership. In a devastating 10 minute second half spell, Polzin headed on a long ball into the path of French who fired home a sweet half volley. French then capped a fine performance with an individual effort to complete his hat trick.

Cougars did not stop trying and an excellent goal line clearance from Black preserved the lead and saw out an emphatic victory.

Barrowby: French, Pilkington, Temple-Fielder, Polzin, Poole, Owen, Lockton, Wade, Black, Gibson.
