Grantham Schools Tournament champions St Mary’s Primary remained unbeaten after stepping up a level to represent Lincolnshire in the Danone Under-11 7-a-side School Teams Cup, played at Nottingham University last Saturday.

All schools qualified through county tournaments and it came as no surprise that the standard of football was excellent. Teams were evenly matched and most of the 10-minute mini-league games ended in draws.

St Mary’s played and drew all five of their fixtures and were only denied a semi-final spot after conceding a last kick of the game equaliser in their third match.

The boys did themselves proud as they worked hard and played their football in the right spirit.

St Mary’s headteacher Geraldine Willders was full of praise for the team which has gone the whole academic year unbeaten under the stewardship of team manager and assistant head David Nicholson.

The event was hosted by the English Schools Football Association.

St Mary’s are from left, back – Jonathan Esiwe, Ryan Collingwood, Regan Wade (c), Spencer Edwards, George Patrinos and Olly Wnukowski; front – Oliver Yellup, Philip Douglas, William Schofield and Frankie Wade.
