YOUTH FOOTBALL: Grantham Town extend Academy with U15 and U16 trials

Grantham Town this week confirmed the football club will be extending the Academy ahead of the 2016/17 season and are now taking applications for the U15 and U16 squad trials which will take place on Saturday, July 16.

With the Academy 16-19 programme receiving more than 100 applicants, Grantham Town believe it is essential to have a structure where players can filter into the programme at 16 years old. The Academy will provide a fun learning environment where players can develop as a modern day footballer, working closely with UEFA licenced coaches, goalkeeper coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, physiotherapists, nutritionists, psychologist and performance analysts.

The Academy U15 and U16 teams will train one night a week and play their competitive fixtures on Saturday mornings in the NERF Junior Premier League against other Academies, including Coventry City, Burton Albion, Mansfield Town and many more.

Academy manager Alex Cross is delighted to be extending the programme: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for young footballers to progress whilst continuing playing for their community team. I am excited to be able to get this over the line and look forward to getting started.

“A lot of professional clubs don’t really pay much attention to Grantham, Sleaford, Lincoln and the surrounding area, which is a massive shame as there are a lot of talented footballers.

“We will be looking at taking 16 players on in the U15 and U16s squad for the 2016/17 season. The three year plan is to have U12 to U16 Academy teams that filter into the 16-19 Academy and then on to the first team or professional clubs.”

In a statement, Grantham Town board members said they were passionate about the extension of the Academy system and shared Alex’s vision: “This is something new and definitely needed in this area. To give young footballers the opportunity to progress is excellent. We look forward to producing our own first team footballers in the near distant future.”

If you would like to attend the trial day at The Meres leisure centre on Saturday, July 16, email GTFCacademy@outlook.com stating your name, age group (next season) and a brief footballing CV (current team, achievements, additional football activities etc).
