YOUTH FOOTBALL: Great Ponton win with second half goals

Mid Lincs Youth League

Birchwood Colts 0

Great Ponton 2

Great Ponton pushed forward from kick-off and forced the majority of the game to be played in the Birchwood half.

The Birchwood defence battled tirelessly and protected their goal from the constant Ponton attacks. Some fantastic play up the left wing from Jack Croft to Ayden O’Brien tand Ted Sweeney forced the Birchwood keeper to pull out some excellent saves to keep the scoreline even.

Birchwood never gave up and tried to catch Ponton out on the breaks, but strong defending from Harry Wing and Ben Harvey prevented them from benefiting from their chances. The score remained 0-0 at half time.

Birchwood tried to push forward more at the start of the second half and forced Ponton keeper Kian Hodgkinson to make some great saves.

Ponton’s first goal came 10 minutes into the half when O’Brien lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box. This gave Ponton a new boost of confidence and, a short while later, returning striker Barry Harrison found the back of the net.

Ponton kept their shape well. The midfield supported both the defenders and the strikers throughout. It was an all-round excellent performance from Great Ponton and the score reflected this.

Men of the match were Jack Croft and Ayden O’Brien.

Great Ponton: K. Hodgkinson, Raitt, Harvey, Wing, McDonald, Croft, C. Hodgkinson, J. Devine, Sweeney-Briffen (c), O. Devine, O’Brien, Tilbury, Harrison.
