Cardboard comes in useful for many things – and apparently creating a scale model of a future Grantham is one of them!

Volunteers from Grantham Museum opened up an empty unit in the Isaac Newton Shopping Centre on Saturday and invited passers-by in to help build a cardboard town filled with all the things they would wish for.

They built a Grantham Eye similar to the London attraction, and even a Gingerbread House to celebrate the town’s very own Grantham Gingerbread recipe.

The event formed part of the ‘My Grantham’ project, a collaboration between Grantham Museum and Grantham College. Made possible by £7,300 funding from Heritage Lottery and £14,500 from Lincolnshire County Council, the project overall will focus on the digital arts and take place in public places, thereby involving the community.

Christine Robbins, museum director of exhibitions, said of the future town project: “We think a museum should be as interested in the future as it is in the past. We have lots of records and objects that show how the town has developed, but we want people to use their creativity to design their future Grantham.”
