One of the most famous and distinctive historic houses in the country is set to open its doors for a new season this weekend.

Burghley House, near Stamford, and its gardens will be opening to the public from Saturday, March 15, until Sunday, November 2. The house is closed on Fridays.

There is also a treat for visitors this spring, with the normally closed South Gardens open until Monday, April 21. They offer a magnificent seasonal display of narcissi and spring bulbs. The South Gardens are open from 11am to 4pm (last admission 3.30pm), with admission by donation.

For house and garden day ticket holders, Burghley’s head gardener John Burrows will lead a guided tour at 3pm, on March 18, 25 and 27 and April 1, 3, 8, 10, 15 and 17.

This year’s house exhibitions, included in the house and gardens ticket, are The House at War, which explores Burghley’s important role as a Red Cross Hospital during World War Two, and Collectibles and Curiosities, which brings to life fascinating objects picked up by the family over their 450 year history at Burghley.

Among numerous events taking place at Burghley during the year there will be three fine food markets, a five-night outdoor film festival from July 30 to August 3, the tenth annual Battle Proms on July 5 and the world famous Burghley Horse Trials on September 4-7.
