Jeff Thompson has been active in political life in the area for more than four decades, having represented Great Gonerby as a district councillor for the past 42 years. His family ties to the village date back to 1560.
However, his love of locomotives has lasted far longer.
Jeff said: “I love railways - I have done since I was a small boy.
“The East Coast Main Line runs right through the middle of my farm.”
One of Jeff’s fondest memories is of driving a ballast train when he was just 12 years old. And soon he will get the chance to do so again.
Jeff said: “For my 70th birthday a few weeks ago I told everyone I didn’t want anything but my family bought me a day as a guest on the Great Central Preserved Railway - I will be driving the steam locomotive. It will be a brilliant day.”
As far as his political career goes, Jeff has no regrets. He said: “The day when I step down can’t be too long off now but I’ve loved every minute of it.”
