I CANNOT fault the Cholmeley Arms at Burton-le-Coggles - my meal there was fabulous.

If any place deserves five stars, this pub does.

I took my fiancee Lesley one Tuesday night after a friend recommended it.

When we walked through the door, it had your typical pub atmosphere - warm, cosy and very welcoming. I thought to myself how it had changed since the last time I visited the place a few years ago, when it was under different ownership. It has vastly improved, from the decor to the way the pub is run.

We were seated at our table and chose our starters and mains from the varied menu. I ordered brie wedges to start, while Lesley ordered prawns. Plus, we were served fresh bread, which I believe was home-made.

My fried wedges were top-notch, they tasted amazing. They came with a side salad. Lesley was just as happy with her choice, which also came with a side salad.

Even though the starters were pretty filling, we were looking forward to the main courses - and they, too, were delicious.

I ordered a 12oz sirloin steak, which came with home-made, thick-cut chips and vegetables, plus I asked for a peppercorn sauce. The steak was really big and cooked just right. I’d asked for it to be cooked medium to well done, and it came out spot-on. The plate was full, for just £16.95.That’s great value for money.

Lesley was impressed with her main of liver served with bacon, mashed potato and vegetables. Luckily for me, she couldn’t finish it all, so I polished the rest off. It was really nice.

Unfortunately, we were so full we couldn’t manage desserts, but a glance at the menu told me there was plenty on offer, including my favourite traditional pub dessert, sticky toffee pudding.

All the staff, including the bar staff, were really friendly and the service was faultless.

The best thing about eating out at the Cholmeley Arms is the top quality food, dished up for a bargain price. Two starters, two mains, a glass of wine, a coke and a £5 tip for under £50! Highly recommended.
