Grantham Music Club welcomes lots of talent for its 86th season

A varied selection of musical talent will perform for Grantham Music Club when its 86th season starts in October.

There will be six concerts in all starting on Wednesday, October 7, with the appearance of The Hinson Family Ensemble at the King’s School. Nigel Hinson and his family will entertain with a varied selection of music ranging from classical to jazz.



On November 11, there will be Music and Poetry of World War One to mark Armistice Day. Tenor Richard Roddis, pianist Clive Pollard and readers Rosalind Williams and Gillian von Fragstein will present a personal anthology of words and music by some of those affected by the Great War. This will take place at the King’s School.

The hugely talented a capella ensemble Cantabile returns to the club to present music for the festive season. They will perform at the Guildhall theatre delivering a mixture of classical and Christmas music together with some items of a more comic touch.

On January 13, James Kirby also makes a return for the club at the King’s School. The pianist has performed as a soloist and as part of the Barbican Piano Trio before.

The fifth concert will be performed by A Baroque Portrait on February 17 (not the 10th as quoted in the club’s brochure) in St Wulfram’s Church. Former King’s School boys Joseph Beech (organ) and Jake Muffet (baritone) are joined by Samuel Pierce (trumpet), Joe is studying at the Royal Academy of Music and Jake is a Monteverdi Choir apprentice.

The sixth and last concert will be performed by Equinox Saxophone Ensemble on March 23 at the King’s School.

The ensemble has played for the club before and its founder, Alistair Parnell, performed last year with great success. The saxophonists play classical and contemporary music, with jazz and folk-inspired items.

Tickets for all concerts, which start at 7.30pm, are priced at £12 (£10 concessions, students free) for non-members. They are available on the door or in advance from the Guildhall Arts Centre box office (01476 406158).

To become a member of Grantham Music Club fill in the form in the club’s brochure which is available from the box office and other venues in town. There is a reduced rate of £48 for an adult and £42 for a senior citizen if subscriptions are received before September 8. Otherwise subscriptions are £50 and £44.
