A series of special interest walks have been organised by South Kesteven District Council as part of next month’s new South Lincolnshire Walking Festival (SLWF) celebrating heritage and history.

The walking festival, organised by Heritage Lincolnshire with funding from the Big Lottery Fund, takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday between September 25 and October 31 with free guided walks across South and North Kesteven, Boston and South Holland.

SKDC’s routes range from walks re-tracing district aviation heritage links to those following Newton’s footsteps, aspects of the Georgian Festival in Stamford and the council’s own healthy walking agenda.

The festival launches at Willow Tree Fen near Spalding – the largest area of wild fenland in Lincolnshire - and concludes on October 31 at the same place.

There are 76 guided walks led by organisations such as The Ramblers, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, Woodland Trust and the RSPB – with various walk lengths and themes.

SKDC has three aviation related walks. Twyford Woods, formerly RAF North Witham, offers a ramble along the runways that saw American D-Day pathfinders head for France and Morkery Woods still has traces of old ammunitions stores.

The third, ‘On a Wing and a Prayer’, is in and around Caythorpe and finishes at St Vincent’s Church, a permanent shrine to airborne forces throughout the years.

Two walks co-incide with the council’s Georgian Festival in Stamford. Both are on the Sunday ( Sept 27) with one exploring the route of the town’s historic Bull Run and another tracing the ‘Horrible Histories’ of Georgian Stamford to tie in with the festival’s hit show.

A Newton’s Footsteps walk will include a local historian and his birthplace at Woolsthorpe Manor is the start of another tracing his family footsteps.
